History

The European Airway Management Society (EAMS) is a non-profit pan-European Society founded in June 2003 during the congress of the European Society of Anesthesiology in Glasgow. The founding members of EAMS were: Ulrich Braun (Germany), John Henderson (UK), Adrian Pearce (UK), Peter Biro (Switzerland), Flavia Petrini (Italy), Veronique Crinquette (France) and Gregorios Voyagis (Greece). The first EAMS Board of Directors consisted of Ulrich Braun (president), John Henderson (secretary), Peter Biro (treasurer) and Adrian Pearce (webmaster).

EAMS is a multidisciplinary society created to provide a forum for health professionals interested in airway management, collaborating with other national and international scientific societies to promote an exchange of information, to encourage education, research and scientific progress - in sum, to raise the standards of airway management!

The Board of Directors by 2021 is composed of Massimiliano Sorbello (Italy) as the EAMS president, Michael Seltz Kristensen (Denmark) as past president and Kemal Tolga Saracoglu (Turkey) as president-elect. Iljas Hodzovic (United Kingdom) and Rüdiger Noppens (Canada) are the secretaries and Robert Greif (Switzerland) is the treasurer. Arnd Timmermann (Germany) is the EAMS executive director, while Ana Isabel Pereira (Portugal) and Pedro Charco Mora (Spain) are current non-officers members.

The EAMS also supports formation of national councils having gathered representatives from 22 countries to date.

During Euroanaesthesia EAMS arranges the annual meeting which includes the general assembly, council meeting and the EAMS annual dinner. These characterize the EAMS spirit of nurturing and strengthening collaboration and friendship between airway experts from different countries.

The commitment of EAMS to promote and disseminate the best scientific base evidence of airway management has been demonstrated through the involvement and organization of several events as congresses, meetings, courses, workshops, lectures and webinars.

  • EAMS organizes the worldwide successful conference “European Airway Congress” (EAC). During the EAC, EAMS provides participants a one of a kind opportunity to share ideas and experiences with international experts in airway management in a warm, singular and unique learning environment. In addition the industry exhibition showcases the newest airway management devices on the market and is a great chance to promptly see and compare products.
  • During a decade EAMS organized the one-day Hands-on Airway Workshop, which was held as a pre congress course at Euroanaesthesia.
  • The first EAMS endorsed advanced airway course was held in the UK; afterwards many different courses were organized and supported by EAMS in several countries. The Society continues to support and endorse scientific airway activities through the endorsement application form available on the webpage.
  • The European Airway Management Society created the “Teach the Airway Teacher” (TAT) course aimed at teaching clinicians to foster airway training within modern educational strategies. Since 2013, EAMS has held TAT courses in several European countries with a very standardized course programme. More than 100 EAMS Airway Teacher certificates have been issued so far.
  • During the first COVID-19 wave in 2020 the Society started a cycle of online webinars to facilitate the exchange of different airway management experiences.

In conclusion EAMS is a growing non-profit society, open for new members, new ideas and concepts, new scientific approaches to airway management and educational strategies to teach and learn airway management. All healthcare professionals involved in airway management are more than welcome to join and take an active part in the Society!

Welcome to EAMS!
