    President | Prof. Dr. med. Robert Greif, MME, FERC

    The President shall administer the affairs of the Society according to the policies set by the Board of Directors, the Council, and the General Assembly, as defined in the By-Laws of the Society.  S/he shall provide leadership to the Society, promote the Society and work to further develop the Society.

    The President shall be,

    Chair of the Board of Directors
    Chair of the Council
    Chair of the General Assembly
    Ex-Officio member of all committees

    The President may delegate to other members of the Board of Directors the responsibility of representing the President and the Society at meetings of national and regional societies, other medical organisations, other specialty societies, and allied health organisations and societies. The President may also delegate qualified individuals to speak on behalf of the President before various governmental bodies, agencies, and any other group so designated by the President.

    After studying medicine at the University of Vienna, Austria, Dr. Greif specialized in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine. Following a post-doc research fellowship at UCSF-San Francisco, CA, he became an associate professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2002. In 2004 he was recruited to the University Hospital Bern, Switzerland; and promoted to professor at the University of Bern in 2009.

    Beside his engagement in clinical anaesthesia and patient care his research focuses on airway management, resuscitation and medical education. He is one of the founders of the Difficult Airway Research Collaboration (DARC).

    Currently he serves as the Board Director of Training and Education for the European Resuscitation Council, as a member of the European Society of Anaesthesiology’s Education and Training Committee and E-learning committee, as the director of the resident training commission of the Swiss Anesthesia Society, as the vice-president of the Cantonal Ethics Commission Bern, and is direction member of the Master of Medical Education Program as well as the Master of Medicine Program, all at the Medical Faculty University of Bern. He is the Editor-in Chief of Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Elsevier which is the EAMS official society journal and associate editor of the European Journal of Anaesthesia.

    He lectures and teaches courses about medical teaching, faculty development, resuscitation and airway management, at international conferences, several Universities in Europe, and at the University Hospital Bern medical students and residents. There he is in charge of the 5th year practical exam (OSCE) and leads the faculty development program of the academic teaching staff at the medical faculty of the University of Bern.

    At the Department of Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Prof. Greif is member of the board of directors. He is managing the “Peripheral Anaesthesia Division” which includes about half of the hospitals surgical specialties, and directs the Medical Education Division including the Bern Simulation and CPR-Center (BeSiC).

    For over 10 years Dr. Greif has been involved with EAMS being the Swiss Council Member and president-elect in 2014. Currently he acts since January 2016 as the president of the European Airway Management Society.

    The President-Elect shall witness the administration of the affairs of the Society in anticipation of the term of office as President.
    The President-Elect shall serve in such other positions as provided in these By-Laws and as directed by the President.

    Michael is a primarily a clinician (!), performing, supervising and teaching anaesthesia at a busy tertiary referral centre.  The main occupation is anaesthesia for ENT, Head-, Neck- and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rigshospitalet, University Hospital of Copenhagen, where he is head of development, research and clinical implementation.

    The primary clinical and scientific interest is airway management. As part of his training Michael had clinical work in the fields of pulmonology and thoracic surgery in order to master the elements of airway management that could be learned from these medical specialties.

    Together with colleagues from around the entire world Michael is continuously driving research and publishing scientific papers related to airway management

    Immediate Past-President shall be available for advice to the Board of Directors.

    Kamil Toker has been graduated medicine in Istanbul University Istanbul Medical School and qualified in Anaesthesiology in Ankara Hacettepe University. He had been working in different university hospitals as the head of anaesthesiology and intensive care departments for more than 30 years. Meantime he has been charged as the dean of Kocaeli University Medical School from 1997 to 2000.

    He is interested in airway management  more than a task for an anaesthetist. He was the chief of Airway Management Committee of Turkish Society of Anaesthesiology 2004 to 2012.

    Kamil has a number of publication in scientific journals taking place in SCI and SCI-Exp mainly in airway management.

    At present he is a professor of Bahcesehir University Medical School Anaesthesiology and Reanimation Department and working for VM Medical Park Hospital in Kocaeli Turkey.

    He is a member of European Airway Management Society since 2005 and was the secretary of the society for 4 years (2009 – 2010) and the president of EAMS during previous term (2014 – 2015) and is being the immediate past present now.

    Executive Director is a member, who advises the Board for every purpose of the society. Tasks of the Executive Director:
    To assist the President and the other members of the Board with extensive background and experience  relating to the society.
    To act as an advisor and supervisor of the Board.
    To act as a negotiator  with other relevant Scientific Societies if needed and approved by the Board.
    EAMS Board can limit the duties and/or define new tasks for the Executive Director.

    Arnd Timmermann was trained at the University Hospital in Goettingen, Germany, for 15 years before he became the Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain Therapy, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, Red Cross Clinics Berlin Westend and Mitte, Berlin, Germany.

    He was awarded the DEAA (Diploma of the European Academy of Anaesthesiology) by the European Society of Anesthesiology. In 2007 he also graduated as a “Master of Medical Education” (MME) at the University Heidelberg, Germany.

    He is a founder member and the current executive director “European Airway Management Society” (EAMS), a member and former board of director of the Society of Airway Management (SAM) and a member of the Task Force “Airway Management” of the German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI). He conducts regular workshops and training courses in airway management in Germany and during international anesthesia meetings.

    His research interests includes difficult airway management, prehospital airway management, extraglottic airways, education, training & simulation.

    Treasurer | Rüdiger Noppens

    Treasurer shall be responsible for the security of the assets of this Society, as directed by the Board of Directors. Withdrawals from the Society Bank Account shall require the signatures of two Officers.

    Dr. Ruediger „Rudy“ Noppens is an associate professor of anesthesiology at LHSC-University Hospital in Ontario, Canada. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of neurosciences at Oregon Health & Science University, USA. Dr. Noppens is active as both a clinician and a research scientist. As a clinician he is not just part of the anesthesia team but also works in pre-hospital emergency medicine as a rescue helicopter doctor and serves as a chief emergency physician. His clinical research pursuits have included strategies for airway management, innovative airway devices in anesthesia and non-invasive hemoglobin monitoring. Dr. Noppens has also studied experimental ischemia in a variety of animal models. He has worked on strategies for preconditioning and reperfusion after experimental brain ischemia as well as mechanisms on neuronal injury. He serves currently as chairman of the taskforce on Airway management of the German Society of Anesthesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine as well as treasurer for the European Airway Management Society.

    Secretary shall maintain and preserve the records of this Society, and direct the Administrative Secretariat of this Society.

    Lorenz finished his university education in the year 2000 in Bern, Switzerland. After working as an anesthesiologist in Lucerne, as an emergency physician on helicopters in the Swiss Alps and as a researcher and clinician in Miami, USA, he returned to Bern as senior consultant anaesthesiologist at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University Hospital of Bern, Switzerland.

    He is the head of the Division of Ambulatory Anaesthesia and of the Division of Anaesthesia for Emergency Medicine and Prehospital Medicine. He also works as a medical research consultant for the Swiss Air-Rescue Ambulance based in Zurich, Switzerland. Lorenz is board member and co-secretary of the European Airway Management Society and a member of the ESA scientific subcommittee 10, "Resuscitation, Emergency Medicine and Trauma”. His main research interest is Difficult Airway Management, but he also published on topics of cannabinoids, coagulation and emergency care. When not working, he usually takes his family to outdoor mountain activities all year round.

    Secretary shall maintain and preserve the records of this Society, and direct the Administrative Secretariat of this Society.

    Tolga is currently working in the field of cardiothoracic anaesthesiology in Istanbul Bilim University Medical School. His main interest is airway management. He is one of the secretaries in European Airway Management Society (EAMS). He is the coordinator of SAME (Simulation Based Advanced Medical Education) Simulation Center Istanbul where he can serve as airway trainer. He is chairman and founder member of Simulation and Technology Department SENATURK Academic Collaboration.

    He is one of the founder members and educators of Turkish Society of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation Subcommittee Airway Management. He is an educator in paediatric airway management for Asian Society of Pediatric Anesthesiologists (ASPA). He lectures and teaches courses about airway management at international conferences, several centers both in Europe and Asia, and at the University Hospital Istanbul Bilim medical students and residents.

    Massimiliano Sorbello, MD

    Born in Catania, Italy, September 10, 1973

    Massimiliano is an airway enthusiastic anesthesiologist working in  a large University hospital in Catania, Italy, with amazing view between mount Etna, Mediterranean sea and centuries of history.

    He has been working in different Specialties in Operatory Room and in ICU, and he is also  in charge for Airway Management teaching programs in postgraduate School in Anesthesia and Intensive Care in University of Catania. He is actually coordinating the Italian national Society of Anesthesia Airway Management research group and he is speaker in many congresses, workshops and scientific meeting in Italy and worldwide, where he enjoys in meeting international airway experts and friends and enthusiastic people which whom to share knowledge and experiences.

    He is also author or co-author of many scientific papers, books, websites modules and e-learning platforms.

    When he is not working or sitting in front of his Mac, you could find him travelling with Ivana or diving down deep his beloved Mediterranean sea.

    Iljaz is a clinical academic at the prestigious Wales School of Medicine, Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. Following graduation from Belgrade Medical School in Serbia his career took him to the United Kingdom where he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University. His main clinical interests are major ENT cancer surgery and anaesthesia for major Upper and Lower GI surgery. 

    Iljaz is a lifelong airway management enthusiast. He has published extensively in the field of difficult airway management with over 100 publications in the peer reviewed journals. Much of his work is related to the evaluation of the equipment used for difficult airway management. Iljaz is invited reviewer for submissions to a number of the national and international peer reviewed anaesthesia journals. Iljaz runs clinical research and statistics courses for Cardiff University and is a member of the Innovation Committees of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He chairs Welsh airway management society (AWAG), which organises a number of airway management courses for anaesthetists and emergency physicians. 

    Whenever a free moment, Iljaz is out in the open sailing Irish and Adriatic seas, long distance cycling or off-piste skiing.
